Strange thoughts in line

Last night I did some grocery shopping, then headed to Chipolte’s. I parked a short distance away and noticed a pair of paramedics getting out of their truck. As fate had it, I reached the door just before they did, so I held it open. They walked through.

Perhaps fifteen seconds before the paramedics had gone in, a couple had walked in the door. The line was reasonably long, but nothing outrageous.

We’re standing in line for a minute or so, when a guy walks in the door. He passes both me and the paramedics and joins the couple. Then, perhaps feeling guilty, they wave the paramedics forward, ahead of their expanded party of three.

Ranking your favorite campaigns

Strangely, I seem to be contrary to the trend on this Treasure Tables post, where the favorite campaigns are the eldest. I suspect that’s because many of them had obvious flaws… like the high school “split but we’ll ignore it and play together” group.

1. Mage: The Ascension (GM, mid/late 20s) To Sway the Stones
2. Mage: The Ascension [player, mid 20s]. Chris’s Beyond the Portal
> D&D3.5: The current Dragon’s Talons game [player, early 30s]
3. AD&D [player, mid/late 20s] Skellwoods Campaign
4. AD&D [player, college] World-spanning, w/ Sython
5. Mage 1st [GM, college]: Ender Peskins and friends
6. D&D 3.0 [player, late 20s]. Strife and Pride.
7. Vampire 2nd [player, mid 20s]. Will’s Fresno Chronicles
8. Shadowrun [player, 30]: Graal
9. AD&D [GM, High School]: My first long, successful game
10. Battletech (player, High School). “Kizmaz” and the Ogre

Next Game: Friday May 5th

Jennifer and I are off to Salt Lake City, so I can meet her mom. If you know any prayers… More seriously, we’ll miss this week, but I’m looking forward to resuming the first Friday in May.

I’ll eventually add to the log on the wiki, but if you’d like to get there first, please do. If there’s anything else, let us know.

Way off topic: we now have a tiny kitten. Max was a little reluctant at first [there was much hissing], but they’ve calmed greatly. Though the little kitten seems fascinated by Max’s twitching tail– which can’t bode well. Anyway, I’m looking forward to gaming again soon.

This weekend was the second anniversary of our first date

It ended in tears, after I asked her to marry me and she said yes.

There was also chocolate cake.

New wiki and Next Game: Friday March 24th

Next Friday night we’re planning on creating characters for our new Star Wars game… and, if we still have time, return to our Dragon’s Talons game.

Since setting up a wiki is a hassle, but I love to share the ability to create and edit, I got a free Peanut Butter wiki. It is easy to use– just click the “edit page” button on top.

Wiki main page. Links to the rest of the wiki.
New Republic Agents. The page I set up for the Star Wars game we’ll be playing (and that Ben will be running). I figure we can discuss characters and the like there… or in this thread if you’d rather.

Update: See the first comment for thorough instructions on making your edits to the wiki. Dad has successfully edited– have you? (Kev has too.)

Hilzoy appreciation

I greatly appreciate Hilzoy’s writings at Obisidan Wings. Her posts are bracing– the make me think about issues in ways I’ve never considered before.

The Blame Game was my favorite Hilzoy post of the year. About real contrition; the key to living a moral life.

Hared is a Poison is a classic, brilliant, Hilzoy post that springboards from C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christiaity.

The responsibility to get it right, an upbraiding of those who refuse to take responsiblities for the wrongs they encourage.

Together with Katherine, they tackled torture this year. Her posts cut to the heart of the matter; in general, her call to examine torture clearly is a great introduction to complex thought on the topic. Working with Katherine she details our abuses and shady dealings. Maher Arar is the category that deals with torture– it has far too many posts for a shining city on the hill.

Yay, my computer survived

This was a messy weekend for the computer– I logged on Friday night to find that I’d been invaded by a combination of viruses and a pair of nasty spyware programs. Despite my best efforts I couldn’t wipe out the infestation, even using several programs in series. So I created a new windows installation and managed to burn much of my old data off to CD.

Yesterday, I thought I’d continue the reinstallation, since most programs require the Windows directory to work. The first reinstallation of WoW didn’t work… probably a conflict with the old version. So I’m looking at reinstalling it again… and running many, many MB of patches to get up to current.

On the other hand, upgrading to Movable Type 3.2 didn’t go too badly at all. Each step of the way there was a little problem, but the documentation was good enough that I could debug it and move on. It’s working very well so far– let me know if you see any problems. (I’m really looking forward to the improved comment and trackback control– even trackbacks were getting badly spammed before the update.)

Stuff

WOTC Indexes:

Disquisition on Government by John C. Calhoun. I hadn’t heard of this, but after hearing it called the anti-constution, anti-declaration of independence, I’m curious. It looks dense.

Wikipedia Fictional Materials Good inspiration, via Roger Wilcox’s homepage. Wilcox’s homepage has lots of interesting stuff, including links to a Star Database, SF analysis, an anti-vegetable polemic and more.

An interesting looking D&D supplement: Hobgoblins.
